Abstracting the Landscape
Weekend Series
Join Michael King (2024 Grand Prix Masters Champion) for this weekend workshop on Abstracting the Landscape for more Dynamic Paintings through Design. This weekend intensive session focuses on the art of envisioning and crafting powerful paintings that transcend mere replication of photographs or real-life scenes. We will dissect the landscape, guiding you in re-imagining it in a more powerful, abstract form.
Students will learn how to distill complex scenes into essential shapes, organize visual information with purpose, and build a design structure that gives their paintings greater strength and clarity.
On the first day, we’ll focus on seeing the landscape through the lens of abstraction, choosing effective references, identifying value and shape relationships, and using design elements to create a sense of flow and visual impact. Day two focuses on developing a final painting that integrates the principles of simplification and design, with special attention to personal interpretation and expressive decision-making.
