This introduction to watercolours starts with a focus on the materials and basic techniques, exploring transparency and other unique characteristics of watercolour.  Learn how to control wet washes and colour mixing, using simple brush techniques to create exciting watercolour effects as you gain an understanding of the challenges of watercolour.  Students joining online will take part in our live sessions at the start of each class, and will use the lesson plan pdf and recording as reference to work along at home during the week.

Class outline:

  • Understanding Watercolour’s unique character, supplies and materials, and techniques
  • Understanding the Colour Compass and how to mix and apply fluid colour
  • Pigment concentration – Building Contrast and Values
  • Learn to work Wet
  • Positive and Negative Shapes
  • Working from light to dark and understanding values
  • Learning how to control Hard and Soft Edges
  • Understanding glazing, washes and transparency
