Cuba Excursions

Phoenix art Workshop presents… A surreal painting experience
with your Hosts Mark Glavina and Mike Radford
Our sixth international painting tour will take us back to our first location ever; where it all began, Cuba!  Join Phoenix Art owner and instructor Mark Glavina and Artist Mike Radford as we paint our way around this magnificent country.  Our tour begins in the heart of Havana Vieja (Old Havana) painting in the Plaza de la Catedral, strolling the Prado toward Castillo San Salvador and the world famous Malecón and winding up an evening at Hemingway’s bar, “La Bodeguita” for a Mojito.
Our tour continues as we travel to the south central part of the Island to the City of Cienfuegos called the “pearl of the South” because its impressive beauty, architecture and surrounding agricultural landscape. From here we continue a one hour journey to the east and visit the picturesque town of Trinidad, a Unesco World Heritage Site founded in 1514; it was the third Spanish settlement in Cuba.  We stay in the oldest part of the City containing beautiful churches, public squares, cobblestone streets and colourful Spanish residential architecture; with the beautiful beaches of the Ancon Peninsula moments away this is an idyllic location.
This amazing painting tour winds up back in Havana for several days to enjoy the incredible culture, music, nightlife and museums. A typical day on our painting tours would include a beautiful, fresh morning breakfast at our hotel followed by a morning painting session and instructional demonstration. Travelers are usually free to enjoy lunch on their own and explore the cultural sites and absorb the local atmosphere.  Typically we would set an early evening rendezvous point to review the days paintings before evening activities and dinner.
Non painters are welcome to join our tours including spouses and friends, however it should be noted that these trips are primarily planned as painting excursions and although every effort is made to accommodate, morning painting hours will be free to explore independently.
Your Hosts
Mike Radford and Mark Glavina met in the early 80’s at Capilano College where they were both students of the renowned commercial art program.  Both avid travelers, Mike and Mark are keen Plein Air painters and accomplished artists and instructors.  We invite you to enjoy this cultural experience traveling with brush in hand.
Mark Glavina
Owner of the Phoenix Art Workshop, Mark has been involved in art education for the last 10 years sharing his enthusiasm through his teaching and community public art projects. An invited guest speaker in schools throughout the lower mainland, Mark’s thoughtful approach to teaching and promoting the arts is contagious.  Primarily a plein air painter in watercolour Mark will share ideas, challenges, design and colour theory specific to location painting in a series of interactive presentations.
Mike Radford
Associate member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and regular traveler to Latin America,  Mike has been teaching watercolours at Phoenix Art Workshop from its inception in 2001. Mike works almost exclusively in watercolour and chooses a variety of subjects to paint.  Mike’s perspective and stories of his Latin American travels are an entertaining complement to his on location demonstrations.
