Sunday Session

Aug 8th Sunday Location Painting
Our next outdoor painting group will be meeting on Sunday the 8th at Britannia Shipyards.  All Phoenix Art customers are welcome to join us on location. Please check our Store blog for cancelations due to weather or if you need help getting started on location — see “Supplies List” and “How to get Started.”

See you on Sunday …don’t forget to check the blog if the weather is inclement to see if we are still on!

NOTE: Please come back and check our blog for future updates on our Sunday Sessions and although we are canceling our Salt Spring Island Adventure I will add some other dates for location painting before the Fall Weather pattern begins.

Painting in Location “Getting Started”
The best time to paint on location is first thing in the morning or at the end of the day, as the light and colours are more dramatic.  Unfortunately in the middle of the day the light is high in the sky and at its most intense, washing out colour and eliminating interesting shadows.  I realize getting up early on a Sunday can be challenging for some of us … But it’s for a good cause.  I will be at Britannia at 8:00 am.  Join me when you can, however at 8:30 am I will conduct a short 20 min outdoor class: “Getting started on location”.  I will discuss composition and perspective essentials critical to plein air painting, and review suggested supplies for working outdoors (watercolour, oils, acrylics, as well as drawing materials.)

This weeks Theme  ”Choosing a Point of View”
Here is a recap for those of you who missed last week we talked about simplifying your subject by 3.  We can think of this in the well known compositional  guideline of  ”Rule of Thirds”.    As a reminded to these three  design concepts think first of dividing your composition into thirds, creating visual interest, and harmony.  In our session we looked at enhancing this concept focusing on “3 design basics”. Keep in mind our eye is always always always attracted to that which is Unique.
1) Shape:
  • Simplify the number of shapes in your composition
  • Vary your shapes type and sizes
  • Organize your shapes in your composition to  draw attention to your focal point save the most unique shape as the centre of interest

2)Value:
  • Allocate a value to each shape - simplify your value plan
  • Vary the values from darkest to lightest
  • Organize your value in your composition to draw attention to your focal point saving you point of highest contrast for your center of interest
3) Colour
  • develop a colour concept with a dominant colour theme
  • Vary your colours value, hue, temperature and intensity
  • Organize your Colou in your composition to draw attention to your focal point saving your greatest colour contrast for the center of interes
